Most (I said most, not all) of the stuff I've heard wasn't that good. But after getting this new excellent load from belgian newcomers Amorfsound - it's official to me that Amorf is the label to watch for in 2006/2007. With a past catalog that's good (Terminal Outputs) and some future releases to really look out for (Cryptic Weevil!). Olivier Pé is an experimental sound maker from Belgium. The way he crafts his sounds is completely unique. This 3" CDr, comprised of 5 tracks, contains loops, instruments, landscapes, drones, and whatever. Every track, lasting between 3 and 5 minutes each (for a total of 21 minutes), create a different atmosphere in the room. One may ask what makes this release so unique (a word that gets tossed around a lot in this experimental/noise scene). I hate to disappoint, but it's another one of those gotta hear it to understand cases - but I can try my best. Track 1 is a soft noise track - not harsh, not drone-y. Sounds like rain or a bunch of people walking - it builds up to make a delicate atmosphere. Track 2 and 3 are where the good stuff is at - I've just gotten this release today and i've already listened to both these tracks on repeat for an hour. Landscape tracks no less, the way the sounds build up and become one is mind-boggling. This whole cdr is worth getting for that 9 minutes right there. Different sources come in and go out to create one hell on an experience. Track 4 is a guitar track - but don't thing there's riff or anything like that (is it a banjo or something?). Reminiscent of certain ambient composers - very nice, and makes for an eclectic change after those 2 field recording tracks. Track 5 is also akin in the landscape track, but it sounds like being in the middle of a supercity with all the industrial noise around you - cars, construction, honks, pedestrians, etc. This release will probably be remembered as my favourite album of summer 2006. Get it while it's hot - both from the artist to watch and the label to watch.

Pulse Emitter & Warning Broken Machine - Live At DIVA

Title: Live At Diva, Oregon
Artist: Pulse Emitter & Warning Broken Machine
Format: CD-r
Year Released: 2005
Label: Obscurica

Oregon label Obscurica was not previously known for releasing top notch live material, but I think Patrick Neve does it by releasing this release, a collaboration between 2 of the finest noiseheads of that scene, Warning Broken Machine and Pulse Emitter. The first track is Pulse Emitter alone, as the second one is a collab between the 2 fellas. The first couple of minutes of track 1 start with simple, singular sound, which later evolve in spaced-out, weird and inspiring noises. Just like most noise, it's hard to describe with words. You feel like you're out of space, but at the same time you feel extremely down to earth. Some sounds become extremely freakish, where the bass or some other frequency becomes so high it almost gives you a heart attack. Mind you, this is nowhere near unstoppable harsh noise. This is well crafted and well thought-out, almost ambient at times noise which, surprisingly enough, only reveals itself after a few listens. Track 1 - clocking in at 44 minutes - showcases all the ability of Pulse Emitter has a performing noise artist. He goes beyond borders without being too pretentious or sounding too harsh. This is experimental art at its best. Track 2, being a collaboration of the two aforementionned artist, is heavier, I should say - but not noisier. The 2 artists synchronise their sounds without being rythmic. On my third listen, somewhere around 12 minutes, I went nuts. Some of the sounds produced here are from out of this world. I don't want to be an asslicker or sound like a fanboy - but it's my duty to recommend this to anyone who hasn't heard it yet. Diversity and constant change are the key here, as the 2 musicians - or should one call them sound artists - have crafted something that is unclassifiable and undescribable by words. Yes, there's always reviewers who say they can't describe them with words but they could compare them to other artists, but so far no artist has popped into my mind that could possibly be compared to this live performance. Top notch, another keeper from Obscurica.

Terminal Outputs - Terminal Outputs

Title: Terminal Outputs
Artist: Terminal Outputs
Format: CD-r
Year Released: 2006
Label: AmorfSounds

Terminal Outputs are from the UK and play feedback/noise. The first track is the best one out of the 4 lengthy tracks, which in total clock in at 61 minutes. Layers and layers of feedback are made to create an ultimate wall of sound, sometimes crunchy, sometimes harsh, but always hypnotizing and beautiful. This is the type of drone/feedback that I really enjoy. On to track 2, which is definitely a louder and rawer version of Terminal Outputs. At around 2 minutes I hear a sort of improvised guitar 'riff' that sounds like a trumpet, and it honestly reminds me of Borbetomagus' work on 'Snuff Jazz' (One of my favourite Borbetomagus album). Track 3 has T.O. going back to mainly just feedback, but there's still some loudness and occasional improvisation involved. Track 4 continues in the same vein but with a harsher and different version. What I find weird about this album is that the first track is completely different than the rest. Spaced-out, immense, ambient, dreamy, but still noise. The rest, however, seems like mindless improvising. Still, it's a pretty good release that most drone/feedback fans should enjoy, if only for the first track.

+Dog+ - Human Garbage

Title: Human Garbage
Artist: +Dog+
Format: CD-r
Year Released: 2006
Label: Audiobot

Noise. Sometimes I wonder how far this art, or anti-art can go. Stuff like +Dog+'s 'Human Garbage' makes me think of this. If i just explain it to you, it'll sound pretty simple: sometimes harsh, sometimes drony, sometimes confusing and just hard to explain. +Dog+ crafts sounds like noone else, going from typical harsh blasts, to out-of-this-world noises i've never heard before, to just goofing around and making noise. Just skip to Pt. 10 for some loud, obnoxious, but surprisingly NOT annoying noise. How one can manage to sound like this is beyond me. Skip to Pt. 7 for some noise that ressembles a bit tractor or some type of big vehicle. Pt. 4 is weird noise paradise, with noise coming from everywhere and making you think 'what the hell?'. Anyways, you get the idea. I've never had such difficulty explaining noise. I'm confused. Just listen to this album if you think noise is either A) all the same or B) redundant. This album constantly changes - from part 1 to 11.

Locust Sympathizer - John Henry

Title: John Henry
Artist: Locust Sympathizer
Format: 3"CD-r
Year Released: 2006
Label: AmorfSounds

I had heard of Locust Sympathizer before, but noone ever told me they made the most annoying and ugly noise on earth. This duo which uses not only electronics but also banjo and washtub bass, creates, I have to say it, the most atrocious and horrible noise. Ever. I don't know if it's the fact that they're extremely lo-fi, but listening to this 3" makes me want to destroy my earphones and then kill myself, in that order. Chinook Breath takes almost no time to get down to business. After only a few second, the harsh sounds take over your body and destroy you. The high pitched noise actually drive me insane. I usually have fun listening to random occurences of high-pitched noise, but this is noise in all its glory: meant to annoy the hell out of the listener. This is harsher than the likes of IDX1274 and even Oscillating Innards (now that's a compliment). I wouldn't compare this to anything else. What makes this so unique is probably the way Locust Sympathizer make their noise. Compared to a classic harsh noise artist that uses 56 pedals and just makes a huge wall of noise, LS craft their noise so it can sound as annoying as possible. Just go a minute into 'John Henry's New Vespa'. You hear that really loud noise? It sure isn't a pedal. Also, I really enjoyed the use of percussions in this track. Although this may push away certain noise listeners, I find it really interesting. Need I say more? This is annoying noise. No less, no more. But it sure does make you want to kill yourself. 2006 is shaping up to be an excellent year for noise, so far. Hail Locust Sympathizer!

En O))) - Another Grimm World

Title: Another Grimm World
Artist: En O)))
Format: CD-r
Year Released: 2006
Label: RSM

First of all, I don't know if En O))) are a joke band or not. I really don't. By looking at the CD case and the inside cover, one can't tell if they're a SunnO))) tribute band or not. But anyways, this is some serious drone right here. This 'extra low fidelity version' spreads across 2 tracks, the first clocking in at 40 minutes and the second at 14. I really don't know why the second one is called Ambient616, because it's obviously 10 times heavier than the first track. Another Grimm World illustrates dark, yet beautiful landscape, without being too loud or heavy. This reminds me a bit of some of Stijn Van Cauter's work in some of his projects. This track could be considered ambient, moreso than drone, but it surely isn't your typical ambient. You can just put your headphones, close your eyes, and start dreaming. It's that lovely. Now for the second track, Ambient616: Discrete Murder, which is definitely heavier and distortioned track. This track reminds listeners slightly of certain SunnO))) material from their early days, almost something from the Grimmrobe demos (coincidence? Probably not). You can tell the same instrumentation was used for the 2 tracks, but it seems like they just added a considerable amount of distortion for the second track. This has to be one of the most interesting drone releases ever. The atmosphere created is unique. Not too noisy, not too drony, not too much ambient. Just the right amount of those 3 elements makes me want to start listening to drone full-time again. Magnificient work.

No John - Madame La Vertu

Title: Madame La Vertu
Artist: No John
Format: 3"CD-r
Year Released: 2006
Label: AmorfSounds

This is how harsh noise should be. Wait, let me rephrase that: This is my favourite type of harsh noise. This release by new label AmorfSounds features a single 7 minute track. Looks like i'll have to check out more stuff by No John. Sure, it's only 7 minutes long, but hey - who cares? This stuff is intense, loud, and unpretentious harsh noise. It starts off wall-ish, with low harsh frequencies. It's the type of noise that become very comfortable to the ear after a while, and it takes you to a dream-like state of mind. After about 2 minutes, the whole thing denses out, introducing some higher tones and more white noise by adding more distortion. I've said this for a while now: half analog and half digital is the way to go. Then, halfway through the fourth minutes, the low harsh frequencies become even more prominent, altering from grinding noise to low, digital synthesized scape. The first 2 minutes of this track are unforgettable, and the rest just a different, without letting go of the abrasive and smooth (once you get used to it) sound. This release and label puts Belgium back on map. Wait, what am I talking about? I forgot about Audiobot for a second. Either way, completely awesome and unpretentious harsh noise, the way it should be done. Better act quick, only 40 are being pressed.

Flatline Construct - Chiroptera

Title: Chiroptera
Artist: Flatline Construct
Format: CD-r
Year Released: 2005
Label: Obscurica

An album about bats. How fucking cool is that? Here we have Canada's (yeah!) Flatline Construct, and his latest (as far as I know) offering on the northwest label Obscurica. Apparently he sat in a cave and gets his inspiration from that, and it certainly shows. Just listen to the first track, 'Fingers Spread And Give Hint To Wing', a heavy, loud, ambient and cave-ish drone/noise track. All these expectations of uneventful drone are soon shattered to dust, as 'Wings Now Lick The Air So Cold' starts. Say hello to distortioned ambient. Although i'd have to say there is always an ambient undertone to this album, it's dark as hell. Best track is probably 'Insectivores Shimmer In The Night' (yes, I know, the title are utterly kick-ass), an 8 minute excursion into a cave full of thousands of bats. Although it does end in a softly, the first 2 minutes of skippy horrible noise make up for it. So overall, if you like bats, ambient undertones, horror and horrible noise, you owe this cd-r to yourself.

Stimbox - 12-01-2005

Title: 12-01-2005
Artist: Stimbox
Format: CD-r
Year Released: 2005
Label: Obscurica

Ok, first things first. This isn't a live release. This is a 62 minute-long track. Just the fact that this legend in the noise can put out 62 minutes of original abrasive in one session is mindblowing. Ok, on to the actual noise. Stimbox manages to create every noise there ever was - harsh densed out noise, 'shrieked' noise, soft noise, calm noise, unpredictable noise, you name it, it's there. My favourites, of course, are the harsher and denser part, and the beginning. Listening to all of this in 1 sit could be the noise challenge of the decade. The tracks starts to get milder, or dare I say atmospheric near the 45 minute mark, creating unique noises i've never heard before. There's no harsh comeback near the end, but Stimbox manages yet again to create unique noises that I've yet to hear in any other noise, let alone experimental release. I can skip to any second in this loud 62 minute track, and no matter what, i'll get something different. Describing and enumerating every noise this CD goes through would take a lifetime, so i'll just stick to this: Stimbox has mastered the art of noise, and this release should go down as one of the greatest noise releases ever, no joking. Check out more of Stimbox' stuff, namely the 4x3" comp. on Obscurica. I have to go now, before I go deaf.

Ames Sanglantes - Le Cri Du Pendu

Title: Le Cri Du Pendu
Artist: Ames Sanglantes
Format: CD-R
Year Released: 2006
Label: Cipher Productions

I knew this would be good. First, because the man behind this project is in Akitsa. Second, because it's from Cipher Productions, a tasmanian label that simply doesn't compromise, releasing album after album of good material. Harsh noise without the shadow of a doubt, Ames Sanglantes play unstoppable noise, although some tracks are quieter. Tracks like 'Le Pendu Est Mort' make the whole thing worth listening more than 10 times. This is the type of noise that really freaks me out. It sounds like human torture. When the high-pitched, everchanging noise isn't there, it's just a big messy and abrasive mess (tracks like 'Désertique', Réalité...'). There's also quieter but unpredictable noise such as 'Les Dernieres Minutes', reminiscent of Sunshine California's work on 'Your Bleu Teeth'. I really felt like I was about to go in the shower and die. Although this is very interesting, the most interesting tracks are the high-pitched changing ones I mentionned earlier (Le Cri du Pendu...). This stuff sort of reminds me of Knurl, and that, coming from me, is a huge compliment. Get this cd now. You won't regret it. Another excellent offering from Cipher Productions.

Formatt - Extended

Title: Extended
Artist: Formatt
Format: 3"CD
Year Released: 2005
Label: RoboRecords

This is probably the most minimalistic and perhaps calm release ever. Released on belgian label RoboRecords, Formatt's 3" offering spreads over five tracks, but they could very well easily be only 1 long track. Yes, it's true, most of it is silence, but the original sound manipulation are, to be honest, something i've never heard before in the experimental/noise scene. 'Guri' features many sounds, probably from nature or something, which keep fading in and out. There's a sort of soft percussion, I can't exactly place what it is. 'L'Hermé' leans more towards the industrial/electronic side of things, with an actual (electronic?) beat, but still, the sound experiments are on top. 'Voir' is where things start to get, as much as I hate to say it, redundant. The drum beat seems like your easy fruity-loops-made percussion beat, and the sounds on top don't change too much. 'Thyone' is the most interesting track of the bunch, simply for its undescribable atmosphere and sounds. 'Seltzer' ends off this 3" CD in a nice way, this track once again leaning towards a more electronic vibe. This isn't the type of release that's easy to describe with words. The listener does what he wants with the music, deciding on mood, atmopshere, etc. Open your ears and listen, and be taken away for a short (17 minutes) but effective trip. Also, i'll say it just for those who haven't realised it yet: this isn't really noise, more along the lines of experimental. Fascinating release.

Torturing Nurse - Hai Shangnurse

Title: Hai Shangnurse
Artist: Torturing Nurse
Format: CD-r
Year Released: 2005
Label: Harsh Noise

Now this band has been getting a lot of attention lately, primarily because they're from China, and we all know Noise doesn't often come out of China. Their Obscurica release didn't impress me all that much, but this release on the Harsh Noise label is where it's at. This is indeed harsh noise, full with vocals (but I doubt there's lyrics, probably just screaming), pedals, but the effects and pedals manipulation play a key role. Tracks like 'Inge' are just fucking mind-boggling, The screams in the beginning are horrifying...the sound of a girl screaming at the top of her lungs. Torturing Nurse? Quite possibly so. This is the type of noise that's so bad it's amazing. A treat for your ears. Other tracks like 'Ignore' have a bit 'softer' side to them (but this is still harsh noise, no less), with a considerable amount of more white noise, but still plenty to keep you going. Tracks like 'Syelrrah' are more on the experimental side, as in, different sounds, more experimentation. Overall, this album is gonna please to everyone: Fans of extremely harsh noise, and also to the fans of more 'experimental' noise without useless arrogant bullshit. Just listen to the beginning of 'Inge' and you'll hear what you're in for.

Wolfguts - Wolfguts

Title: Wolfguts
Artist: Wolfguts
Format: CD-r
Year Released: 2005
Label: Audiobot

'Wolfguts' is the first release of the artist of the same name. Audiobot says it's one of the best Dark Ambient debuts to surface this year and I can't agree more. Divided into 4 tracks and spreading through 20 minutes of dark and disturbing ambient, most of them having windy sounds reminiscent of Wapstan. The walls of wind push you into an everlasting despair, so immense. I'd have to say the highlight is the second track, 'Winding and Bleeding part one'. Now, my only complain is that the album sort of degrades in the 2 last tracks. The third track, having a more experimental/psychedelic edge to it, doesn't render justice to the atmosphere you just witnessed in the first 2 tracks. That being said, this track could very well be added on another release presenting another tone. The last track has a bit more white noise, making the wind sound a bit less realistic, but it's all good. So, overall, very good except the third track, which simply doesn't fit. It's also good when you're on drugs. Time's running out, though - Audiobot only made 70 copies.

Knurl - Hematoma

       Title: Hematoma
Artist: Knurl
Format: CD-r
Year Released: 2005
Label: Obscurica

Here we have Knurl, one of Canada's most 'prestigious' noise artists. For this recent offering on the Oregon label Obscurica, he plays 38 minutes of harsh, white noise a plenty noise spread over 5 tracks. Somewhat reminiscent of some of Emil Beaulieau's live work, the noise here is relentless, harsh, and last but not least heavy. This goes beyond harsh pedal noise. 'Cytheamia' is probably the most diverse and headache-inducing track out of the bunch, having more low-end and 'no-fi' high-speed bass drones. There is also a background sound, i'm not sure whether it's metal, pedals, or just the headache i'm having, but it just kills you. Unlike a lot of noise artists, Knurl plays actual harsh noise, with all the elements that are need to create a killer headache: white noise, pedals, and anything else that's just ear-raping. This is actually the first time i'm scared/get a headache after listening to noise. Another top-notch release for Obscurica, and another excellent release on Knurl's behalf. Think you can take it?

Crank Sturgeon - Explanation Bias

Title: Explanation Bias
Artist: Crank Sturgeon
Format: CD-r
Year Released: 2005
Label: Obscurica

Now this is an interesting release. Each copy comes with a different cover. The first 2 tracks, Cz and Sayahwon't (Say you won't) are more in the spoken word type, but not in a pretentious, arrogant manner. 'Blues in Cz' is basically an improvised 'bluesy' acoustic guitar track. 'Condor Pape' is when the actual noise starts. Minimalist for sure, the noise is taken from various sources, slightly reminiscent of Hardline Elephants. 'Tableau Boal' is probably the most interesting track in the bunch, clocking in at 14 minutes. Still made using various sources, but after a while it gets a bit irritating. Bit/Tar's spoken word passage is pretty interesting, though. The rest of the album is continued in the same vein. Overall, not bad at all, although some moments fell like waste.

Tourette - Un Vent Glacé, Une Ombre Étrange Dancé Dans Tes Yeux

Title: Un Vent Glacé, Une Ombre Étrange Dancé Dans Tes Yeux
Artist: Tourette
Format: CD-r
Year Released: 2005
Label: Audiobot

Although he's only released a couple of albums, Tourette is probably the prime French noise artist. Creating his noise with mostly pedals, he puts up very harsh, somewhat sophisticated and intriguing noise. As opposed to most harsh noise albums, this contains (very) random occurrences of totally random 'atmospheric' and calming passages that last about 30 seconds before the noise starts up again. Also, not all of this is harsh noise. Some of it sounds thin, slightly reminiscent of Danny Kreutzfeldt work on Noiseworks 1, which makes a very interesting, intense and minimalist listen. Some tracks, like 'Glace Mes Pas Vers La Lumière', start off with what seems to be distortioned, drone-like keyboards. This is a very diverse album, and that's a big compliment seing as this is harsh noise. Definitely interesting stuff.

Merzbow - Senmaida

Title: Senmaida
Artist: Merzbow
Format: CD
Year Released: 2005
Label: Blossoming Noise

Here we have it. The god of noise, pretty much. At least for now. The Japanese Emil Beaulieau. If you're remotely into noise, you've heard of him. He's been releasing stuff since the 80's. Senmaida, one of his latest, is definitely different. Divided into 3 tracks and totalling 53 minutes, the most interesting part here is the drum beat. I have to agree this scared me a little bit at first, but it turns out to be really cool. Tract 1 has an almost-constant drum beat throughout the whole song, and the noise is absolutely amazing. Crispy, some harsh, and definitely not repetitive. Tract 2 has less rhythm, while Tract 3 is almost completely noise (and harsher noise at that). If you're a fan of non-rhytmic noise, you'll probably prefer the third track, but personally the first track is unbeatable. I don't think Merzbow disappoints a lot (well from what I've heard...I don't think a lot of people own his complete discography), so this is definitely worth checking out.

Small Cruel Party/Toy Bizarre Split

Title: Split
Artist: Small Cruel Party
Format: 3"CD-r
Year Released: Unknown
Label: Unknown

This is probably the most quiet 'noise' release ever. In fact, a major part of Toy Bizarre's part consists of silence. Up first is Small Cruel Party, who displays great sound manipulation talent. Traverse About Goulier I is the sound of peaceful water silently streaming. Traverse Above Goulier II is the soft sound of wood being carefully hit against other wood. The sound manipulation skills are really put to test at TAGIV, where the sounds we hear are some sort of bells with hints of sheep or some animal in the background. Definitely an interesting listen if you like sound manipulation and quiet 'noise'. Toy Bizarre's part of the split runs through one 10 minute track, most of it being in the near-silence area. Unique esoteric atmosphere is presented at around 3 minutes, with the occasional appearance of percussion (although this is, of course, non-rhythmic). Even though this track was mostly made of silence, it still has it's strong points. Overall, I wouldn't consider this noise or music, more sound manipulation. Definitely an interesting listen, although it's not something you'll be blasting on a friday night. Still an appealing and gripping release.

Roxanne Jean Polise - Projecting the Universe on the Back of your Eyelids

Title: Projecting the Universe on the Back of your Eyelids
Artist: Roxanne Jean Polise
Format: CD-r
Year Released: 2005
Label: Xdey

Released on the prolific Xdey records, RJP's own label, this is one of many RJP releases to grace the noise audience in 2005. I think I can safely assume RJP is one of underground noise's most important figures, and it doesn't take a genius to figure out why. This release is a perfect example of RJP's talent. Some of the stuff here is harsh, but everything here is done in such a passion that emits such perfect landscapes, macabre emotions and the likes. 'Melting Clouds for Him' is a perfect example of said emotion. It's incredibly simple and minimalistic, but it contains keyboards/samples/whatever like no other, which is slightly reminiscent of LJDLP's work on Douce France. It's a given that Steev Thompson is influenced by tons of other musical genres such as Shoegaze. A nice mix of pedal/harsh noise mixed with unique and macabre dark ambient/atmospheric. Definitely worth checking out.

PCRV - Saturated

Title: Saturated
Artist: PCRV
Format: CD-r
Year Released: 2005
Label: Obscurica

PCRV's (Pop Culture Rape Victim) Obscurica CD-r was recorded in june 2005 in 1 take with no overdubs, which makes this CD even more impressive. It contains some extremely harsh, wall-type noise, and it also contains many quiet and atmospheric moments loitering in the near-silence zone. 'Bust' is an on-and-off constant battle between harsh sounds and atmospheric landscapes, but it really kicks in at 11 minutes, where harsh and layered noise takes the top. It decreases, little by little, until the track ends. A test of one's mental degradation. 'Images of Melted Wax' is a 13 minute non-stop harsh and unforgetting track, with some sounds reaching the near rhythmic zones, with a lot of bass. The track gets heavier and noisier, incorporating pedal effects to the ton and high frequencies. 'I'm Good at Other' also has some harsh moments, but what shines out here is the atmospheric noise. A dead macrocosm waiting to emerge into something of its own, but it just doesn't do so. There's a few minutes of harshness before the album meets an abrupt but honest end. This is one of Obscurica's best releases, and that's a compliment seing as the label has a very large catalogue of excellent noise.

Jake Vida - Corrosive Memory

Title: Corrosive Memory
Artist: Jake Vida
Format: B-card
Year Released: 2005
Label: Knife In The Toaster

One of Ontario's finest harshnoisers, Jake Vida, serves up a nearly 5 minute track of harsh noise. Slightly reminiscent of Kakerlak (who also has a release on KITT) and Oscillating Innards, it's performed in a straightforward nerve-shattering pedal shredding fashion. There's no place for silence. Harsh noise takes over. This guy knows how to use his pedals. You lose yourself in the noise. There's not much to explain, what it takes is passion and that's exactly what Jake Vida has. Highly recommended. Another good Canadian harsh noise offering.
